For over twenty years, with develoPPP, the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) has been promoting the commitment of entrepreneurs who wish to invest sustainably in a developing or emerging country and expand their local operations. To this end, it provides technical and financial support of up to 2 million euros in more than 60 developing and emerging countries. The prerequisites for funding are a long-term business interest in the country and a sustainable developmental benefit for the local people.

develoPPP Classic

The develoPPP Classic funding instrument is aimed at established small, medium-sized and large enterprises that wish to invest sustainably in a developing or emerging country and expand their business activities locally. It can be used in over 60 countries worldwide and is deliberately flexible in terms of content. What all develoPPP Classic projects have in common, however, is that they combine a long-term business interest with a sustainable developmental benefit.

- Companies from the European Union (EU), member countries of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) and local companies from developing and emerging countries
- Minimum of eight employees
- Minimum 800,000 EUR annual turnover
- At least two audited annual financial statements
- A positive net income as well as a sufficient equity capital and liquidity to ensure the company’s contribution
- 100,000 to two million euros with at least 50 percent company contribution
- Maximum of three years
- Four times per year
- Viaideas competitions at DEG or GIZ

develoPPP Ventures

With develoPPP Ventures, BMZ supports young companies that are already active in a developing or emerging country and whose business model makes a measurable contribution to sustainable local economic, ecological and social development. The aim is to scale up proven, innovative solutions in order to make them accessible to more people.

develoPPP Ventures is currently available in Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa and Tanzania. Other countries will follow.

- Young companies registered in the target country or planning to register there before the start of the funding
- The company is privately owned and profit-oriented
- At least one annual financial statement is available
- A business and financial plan is available
- Other investors must be convinced of the business model (matching funds)
- A maximum of 2 million euros in funding has been raised to date
- There is high growth potential and the break-even point will be reached within a maximum of three years
- Up to 100,000 euros within the framework of a matching funds model
- Maximum two years
- Twice annually
- Via the ideas competition at DEG or GIZ (depending on the target country)

New call for applications launched

Funding within the framework of develoPPP is decided in the course of regular call for applications. Until June 30, interested start-ups can apply to receive support for suitable projects that promote the socio-ecological transformation.
